Tenants Lose Deposit Protection

Tenants who are renting their property through an unaccredited estate agency are set to lose their right to deposit protection.

After sustained pressure from insurers, the Tenancy Deposit Scheme (TDS) announced it will no longer offer protection services to lettings and property management firms that are not members of regulated bodies.

There are five bodies that estate agencies can register with including the Association of Residential Lettings Agents, the National Association of Estate Agents, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, the Law Society or the National Approved Letting Scheme (NALS).

Caroline Pickering, NALS independent chair, said: "The TDS decision highlights the importance placed on both accountability and financial security within private rentals."

"Lettings firms need to guarantee optimum levels of trust and support for both tenants and landlords," she added.

She concluded that accreditation was the only simple answer for estate agencies.
